Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
This condition, also known as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux, is a common disease. In most patients, treatment can be achieved through dietary changes or medications. Surgical treatment is required only in a small number of cases. A gastroscopy (endoscopy) may be necessary for diagnosis.
If reflux is left untreated, it can lead to chronic cough, hoarseness, and, more importantly, damage to the esophagus. In the long term, this damage may progress to esophageal cancer.
Surgical Treatment
When surgery is necessary, it can be performed using a minimally invasive technique—laparoscopic reflux surgery. The success rate of the procedure is quite high. The operation takes about 45 minutes, and patients typically need to stay in the hospital for one day post-surgery. For the first 3–4 weeks after the procedure, certain dietary guidelines must be followed. Your doctor will provide guidance on this. After this period, a completely normal diet can be resumed.
